Alexander Technique

One-day introduction to the Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a practical method of self-help in which we learn how to better look after ourselves in daily life. Overcoming back or neck pain, joint problems and stress are some common reasons why people want to learn the Alexander Technique. The Technique is also widely used to improve performance skills in drama and music schools and in the business world.

Course content
Using a mixture of discussion and practical work (group, pair and individual), we will explore how we go about our daily activities and how the Alexander Technique can make life easier for ourselves. If you want to volunteer for one of the demonstrations you will also have the opportunity to experience some hands-on, one-to-one work. Everyone will have the opportunity to try out ‘active rest’ – an activity involving a particular way of lying-down which encourages the release of excess muscle tension and stress. The aim of the day is to be fun as well as being informative.

Course outcome
You will:
• have a basic understanding of the principles underlying the Alexander Technique
• have learnt some useful tips and tools that you can apply in your daily life to help you look after yourself better
• gain enough practical experience to assess whether you wish to take it further
• and, should you wish to pursue the Technique, know what steps to take next.
