ADAM, from Weaverham - studying Theatre Studies, Performance Studies, Psychology

"Before I came to Sir John Deane’s College I had a very set view of the process of Theatre and fixed opinions of different genres and styles. Now thanks to A Level Theatre Studies I have a much broader knowledge of all variations of Theatre and the challenges that it presents. Similarly I have been able to develop other skills in devising, directing and script writing. It is thanks to this course that I had the necessary knowledge to apply for multiple different courses at university, from Musical Theatre to Contemporary Theatre Practice."

International Baccalaureate

Sir John Deane’s College became an IB World School in 2011.

Why study The IB?

The IB is an internationally recognised exciting two year programme for ambitious students. It offers the opportunity to study a wider range of subjects than A Levels and will be attractive to students who have enjoyed studying a range of subjects at GCSE and want to continue doing so at advanced level. The IB is recognised by universities as providing real academic challenge. It includes additional activities such as community service and enrichment activities as part of the qualification. It is one of the fastest growing qualifications in the UK and is offered in over 100 countries around the world.

Internationalism

This course places a strong emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship, and promotes an interest in the wider world and other cultures.

What are the entry requirements?

Because the IB covers a wider range of subjects than A Levels and includes additional activities, you will need to be well organised and well motivated. You will need to have achieved 6 B grades (which must include English and Maths) at GCSE or equivalent level in subjects appropriate to your IB programme of study.

What will I study and how will it be assessed?

All students follow a programme of 6 subjects chosen from the hexagon below (left). You will study 3 subjects at Higher Level and 3 (or equivalent) subjects at Standard Level also chosen from the groups below. Please note that our final subject offer is dependent on recruitment.
You will also study a compulsory core. This consists of three elements: TOK or Theory of Knowledge which stimulates critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside College; CAS or Creativity Action Service where you can follow a balanced range of different activities over the two years of the course, and an Extended Essay on a subject of your choice. You will be assessed mainly by examination in the May of the second year of the course but there is also an element of teacher assessment in most subjects, typically about 20%. Each subject is awarded points from 0 to 7 and you can also gain up to 3 points for TOK and the extended essay. Hence an overall maximum score of 45 would be equivalent to 5 grade A* at A Level. An overall score of 24 is equivalent to 2 x Grade C and 1 x Grade B at A Level. You must achieve at least 24 points to gain the IB qualification.

Where will it lead me?

The IB is accepted by all UK universities and most universities abroad. It is highly regarded as academically challenging and thus offers entry to a wide range of professions. The IB is appropriate for a particular kind of student: you need to be highly motivated, well organised and prepared to work hard to take on the challenges of an international qualification such as this.
