Introduction to Sewing Skills

sewing machine & threads

One day introduction to sewing skills course

Course content
This is a basic introduction to sewing skills. The aim of the day is to give you the confidence to start sewing; for yourself, for gifts, or for your home.
We will look at commercial patterns and guide you through the important, but perhaps bewildering information shown on the pattern envelope.  We will also discuss pattern markings so you will be able to lay & cut fabric with confidence.
Once you have learnt to cut out your fabric it’s time to learn how to sew it up!  Our Bernina sewing machines are simple to use and once you have learnt to thread them you can practice sewing a range of construction techniques such as seams and darts.

Course Outcome
You will have the knowhow to enable you to select and purchase a commercial pattern.
You will be better prepared to decipher the pattern envelope and lay your pattern pieces.
You will have a set of construction samples for reference for your new hobby!

Materials Required
Note book and pen/pencil.
Due to Health and Safety implications we cannot allow you to bring your own sewing machine.  We have Bernina sewing machines which will be available for use in our textile classroom.
Please bring your glasses if you need them for close work, I find I need my reading glasses for the sewing machine.

Additional Costs
Fabrics for samples will be available for purchase from the tutor on the day of the course.  This will be a couple of pounds and will not be in excess of £5.
