"I came to College with very few people from my school but the friendly atmosphere at Sir John Deane’s made it easy for me to make new friends, mainly from my music class because we all have the same interests. In Music we have so much fun whilst learning and take part in many concerts. All the teachers are wonderful and treat you like young adults rather than children."
Students scoop Portico Prize Young Writers’ accolades
TWO English students from Sir John Deane’s College have scooped accolades in the prestigious 2011 Portico Prize for Young Writers competition.
Mike Hocking won the poetry section while Simon James took the non-fiction category of the competition.
The Portico Prize for Young Writers – a literary competition celebrating the writing of young people in northern England – was launched last year in collaboration with the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Sue Harding, English tutor at SJD, said: “We are all so proud of what Mike and Simon have achieved and wish them well at the prize giving ceremony in November.
“The standard of entry was very high this year but both the SJD entries were judged to be outstanding.”
Both winners will receive their prizes at the Portico Library on November 9 and will be given a unique and beautifully bound copy of the anthology of winning and commended entries for 2011.
The Portico Library – a subscription library founded in central Manchester in 1803 which focuses mainly on 19th century literature – launched the Portico Prize 25 years ago. Since then it has grown to become a leading event in literary circles. The Portico Prize for Young Writers competition was launched last year.
