The Curriculum

THE CURRICULUM

The great thing about a Sixth Form College is that we can guarantee to give you almost any combination of the subjects on offer to make up your study programme.

You will find on the following pages full details of all the examination courses.  Please take some time to consider carefully every area which might be of interest to you, so that you can make the very most of your time at Open Evenings, when you will have the opportunity to discuss possible choices with subject teachers and with students.

It is important for you to choose subjects that you enjoy, in which you have strong prospects of success (eg. a proven track record at GCSE level) and which support your ultimate career choice. You should also take the time to consider carefully the entry requirements that universities specify for particular courses at degree level.

The following notes explain how we will put together your study programme of AS and A Levels. All full time students wishing to follow Advanced Level programmes will be expected to keep breadth in their academic programmes by choosing 4 AS subjects in the first year of their course.

The key feature of the AS (Advanced Subsidiary) is that all AS specifications are modular, and, whilst you will have covered the first year of study of a full A Level programme, if you choose to finish your studies at 17+, this will mean that, if successful in your end of year assessment, you will leave with a nationally recognised qualification.

However, we hope that, along with the great majority of our students, you will move automatically into year two of your A Level programme. At this stage, you may opt to continue with the second stage to full A Level in all 4 of your original subject choices (but you can choose to continue with just 3 if this is appropriate).  As with AS, the full A Level syllabuses are modular and therefore there is scope for limited re-sit opportunities.

All students taking Advanced Level courses, whatever their subject specialisms, will also follow a General Studies course, leading to AS and A Level qualifications.

Full details of the General Studies programme are given in the courses section. Students will also receive appropriate support in ICT, as needed.

For suitably qualified students, there are also opportunities to take up the Extended Project Qualification (equivalent to an AS Level and highly regarded by universities) or to experience undergraduate level study by taking up a YASS module with the Open University (see next page for further details).
