JESSICA, from Tarporley - studying Economics, Maths, Biology, Art & Design

"I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Economics at Sir John Deane’s as the course is very interesting and is taught by very helpful and friendly staff. Economics should seriously be considered as an option and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to study a social science at Sir John Deane’s as it helps gain insight into many other linking subjects."

Applied Health & Social Care

This is a superb course for those interested in a career in health and social care. For example, you might be interested in nursing, physiotherapy, social work, youth work, speech therapy, teaching, occupational therapy, medicine or other similar professions.

What are the entry requirements?

The standard College entry requirements. However, two thirds of the course is coursework based and there is only one exam in each year. Please only consider this course if you know you are an organised person and coursework is something you cope with easily.

What will I study and how will it be assessed?

We follow the EDEXCEL specification.

For AS you will study:

  • Human Growth and Development (Examined Module)
  • Communicating and Values in Health and Social Care (Coursework Module)
  • Positive Care Environments (Coursework Module)
  • All units carry equal weighting to make up your AS certificate (50% of A Level)
For A2 you will study:

  • Meeting Individual Needs (Examined Module)
  • Promoting Health and Well Being (Coursework Module)
  • Investigating Disease (Coursework Module)
  • All units carry equal weighting to make up your A Level certificate (50% of A Level)

Does Health and Social Care link well with other subjects?

You could study Health and Social Care alongside any other subject and keep your options open! But, if we had to pinpoint a few subjects that it does sit well with, we would probably say: Human Biology, Biology, Sociology, Psychology and possibly PE. But it really is up to you, although, if you have a particular career in mind, it is best to check what subjects you will need to study alongside Health and Social Care.

Where might Health and Social Care lead me?

Health and Social Care will open the door to many caring professions.

In the Lower Sixth you will spend two hours a week at a work placement of YOUR choice which will give you brilliant experience ready for the world of work or university.

Each year our students leave the course to study a variety of care related courses at university or in Further Education.
