Role Specification for Governors

Main activities and responsibilities

*  To make every effort to attend and to contribute towards Corporation and
    Committee meetings together with training and development sessions for 
    Governors as appropriate.

*  To play an active role in the strategic planning process of the College by
    contributing towards discussions relating to:

• The development of the College’s educational character and mission
• The monitoring of achievement against objectives
• The development of plans to address areas of improvement
• Capital projects which the College is considering

*  To play an active role on one of the Corporation’s committees:-

• Policy & Resources (curriculum, accommodation, college finances)
• Audit & Search (quality assurance, governor training and recruitment)

*  To contribute to the regular monitoring of the financial health of the College

*  To participate in the life of the College community eg Open Evenings
    Concerts, Presentation Evenings.

Personal Qualities of Corporation Members

The qualities listed below are intended to provide a guide to the range of qualities which the Corporation considers are appropriate for its members.  It is not intended to be exhaustive.

GOOD CHARACTER

• Personal Integrity

• No issues which would bring the Board or the College into disrepute

UNDERSTANDING & COMMUNICATION

• Ability to understand documents, identify and comprehend relevant facts and follow discussions
• Willingness and ability to communicate and enter into discussions
• Respect for the views of other people
• Objectivity and the ability to remain open-minded

SOCIAL & EDUCATIONAL AWARENESS

• Understanding of the local community that the College serves
• Interest in young people particularly those within the 16-19 sector and their educational development
• Respect for people from different cultural ethnic or social backgrounds
• Interest in educational issues which concern the post 16 sector 

COMMITMENT & RELIABILITY

• Willingness to attend all meetings of the Corporation and of its committees as well as training and development events.
• Commitment towards developing your own effectiveness as a governor
• Support of family and employer
• Commitment to the long term future of Sir John Deane’s College.
