Financial Issues

College Fund

When you enrol at the College in September, we will ask you to contribute £30 to the College Fund.  This is a voluntary contribution that is used to help support activities such as team sports, music and drama productions and other enrichment activities that we may not otherwise be able to fund to the same extent.  A proportion of the fund is also given to the Student Council Committee to administer.

Foundation Governors’ Fund

Students who are, for example, doing a year of voluntary service between College and University or who are competing at national or international level in sport may apply for a grant to the Principal who will put their application to the Foundation Governors, who administer the charitable trust that owns the College grounds and buildings.

Policy on Charging for Activities

As you will have seen, the College offers you the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities to support your examination courses and your leisure interests.  These include fieldwork, visits, sports fixtures, etc. Although the College often subsidises the cost of these activities from the College Fund, you will have to find the rest of the money yourself. We recognise that this may prove a burden to some families who may have financial difficulties, and you or your parents should discuss the help you need in meeting the costs of trips, etc. with Roisin O’Connor, Assistant Principal (Student Services).

Other Financial Assistance to Students

In September 2004 the Government introduced the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).  This scheme can provide weekly payments of between £10 and £30 to students from families with a household income of up to £30,810 (this is the current threshold which may change), as well as offering up to 5 bonus payments of £100 each.  You can find out more about the scheme and how to apply from your school, from Connexions or by visiting the website at www.ema.direct.gov.uk.

We realise that there are other costs involved in remaining in full-time education and the College has limited funds of its own to support students in meeting these costs.  If your family is in receipt of benefits or on a low income, you may be eligible for financial assistance with the cost of transport to and from College, books and equipment, meals at College or educational visits.  Full details are available on request and will also be issued with our Welcome Pack. You may also be entitled to help with home to College transport from your Local Authority.  At the time of publication of this prospectus details were not available of the support being offered by the new unitary authorities – Cheshire West and Chester, and Cheshire East.  A new Integrated Transport Unit is being set up to deal with transport related queries including eligibility for subsidised transport.  We have been advised that the telephone number for the new unit is to be 01244 976044.
