"I came to Sir John Deane’s from a local high school. The College is great, really welcoming and has a really good atmosphere. My Politics lessons are always really interesting and have helped me to develop skills that I use in other subjects and will hopefully assist me at a university level."

IF you’ve ever fancied becoming a lifeguard – here’s your chance!

SJD Leisure Centre is hosting a week-long National Pool Lifeguard Training Course in October.

The course is ideal for any swimmers who would like paid work as a lifeguard in a leisure centre.

It is open to swimmers who meet the following criteria:

  • Able to complete 50metres front crawl in less than 1 minute.
  • Able to complete 50metres breaststroke in less than 1 minute 20 seconds.
  • Swim 25 metres on their back using breaststroke legs.
  • Deep water recovery – enter the pool and recover a brick from the pool floor.

During the intensive training course, swimmers will be taught resuscitation techniques, spinal turns, different methods of towing people and returning them to poolside, health and safety and first aid.

“This is an intensive course and those who are successful will gain a nationally-recognised qualification as a pool lifeguard,” said Lesley McLaughlin, Manager of the SJD Leisure Centre.

“The course is being run by Action Training Services and their previous courses run at SJD have proved extremely successful,” she added.

The course takes place from Monday, October 27 to Friday, October 31, each day.

The cost, including final assessment is £259.46.
