SJD advance to second round of the Rugby NatWest cup
Sir John Deane’s (SJD) travelled to Altrincham Grammar (AG) for their first round game in the Schools U18 Nat West Cup.
In the first half SJD played with the wind however it was AG who were the first to score early on. A slick move in the backs and an easy run in for the AG centre to score out wide. This was a wakeup call for SJD and from the kick off (KO) SJD laid siege to the AG line but were unable to get over the white wash. After 10 minutes of pressure a dropped ball by SJD and a hack through from AG meant AG were on the attack in SJD’s half and after several phases of play AG scored their 2nd try under the post. Score 12-0.
The SJD players still believed they were in the game and just needed to cut out the mistakes. There then followed some great team play with moves combining backs and forwards which lead to a try from George Hyde and the conversion from Ollie Brown. 12-7.
SJD continued piling on the pressure with AG giving away penalties and Ollie Brown making them pay converting 2 kicks. 12-13.
AG replied just before half time with their second try again coming from a mistake in midfield by SJD. This was converted and the half time score 19-13 in AG’s favour.
Second half began and it was SJD playing the rugby and putting pressure on AG. A big hit from centre Will Morrillo on the AG centre set the tone and some strong runs from the forwards pushed SJD deep in AG’s half and a strong run from Jacob White led to him scoring close to the posts. Ollie Brown Converting. 19-20.
There then followed a period of play with both teams playing some attractive running rugby. AG scoring a try and 2 penalties in this period. 32-20.
SJD kept playing the rugby and didn’t panic. Some attractive team rugby followed with both forwards and backs pushing deep into AG’s half and they were unable to cope with the pressure with SJD scoring tries from Ollie Brown, a second from George Hyde and the final score from Tom Merrick. Score at this point with 5 minutes to play 32-37 in SJD’s favour.
SJD defended valiantly for those 5 minutes but were unable to stop AG scoring out wide. Scores level 37-37. The AG kicker had the conversion to win it for AG but his attempt went wide.
As the scores were level the away side being SJD meant that SJD progress through to the second round of the cup.
This was a great team performance from all 20 players.
