Community Governors


David Charlton - Chair 

I was Head Teacher at Weaverham High School from January 2000 until July 2018 and previously served on the Governing Body of the college for six years. Prior to becoming Head at Weaverham I have taught and held leadership positions in a number of 11 to 18 schools in different parts of the country. I live in Acton Bridge and my three sons attended the college before proceeding to university. I currently chair the Cheshire West and Chester Schools Forum and am chair designate of the Cheshire West Education Improvement Board.



Lynda Allen

I started as a Parent Governor in the early 1990s, bringing to the Board the experience of a parent who had been involved with education both here and in the USA. I have been Chair and Vice Chair & now, as Vice Chair of SFCA, the SFCs national organization, am able to continue to contribute.


Paul Blakeman

I am a chartered accountant with a big four accountancy firm with extensive experience in both financial audit and corporate tax compliance. My first spell as a governor was during my time as a student at the college in 2009/2010.  I am delighted to return to the board in 2018 and I look forward to bringing both financial and general strategic experience to the Sir John Deane’s board.



Mike Cooksley

A former accountant, entrepreneur and businessman I have comprehensive experience as a leader of several key public/private bodies and partnerships including Chair of Visit Chester & Cheshire, Chair of The Weaver Valley Management Board and a Government Advisor on The Inland Waterways. I previously served on the board for six years before being reappointed and I am also a Trustee of The Petty Pool Vocational College.


Jane Hough

My working career encompasses 28 years in both the public and private sector in retail, commercial property, warehousing & distribution, the leisure industry and education. I have been a Governor at Sir John Deane’s College since July 2012 and I bring a wealth of experience within project management, finance and industry, my links with local partners and business to the governing body role.


Sheila Powell

For over 30 years I have enjoyed a varied career in education and for around 20 years I taught in a large Since relocating to Davenham 12 years ago I have worked across Cheshire schools teaching disadvantaged and disengaged students for whom attendance at school is an issue. I am now proud to be associated with Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College.


 Alan Redley - Chair

I have extensive board level experience as Vice President / Chief Operating Officer of a  company in California and as head of an international commercial group. Prior to that I was responsible for maintenance and operations of large chemical plants in the UK. I became a Governor of Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College in 2003 and aim to support the College using my business experience. I have been Chair and Vice Chair of Governors and have chaired the College’s Audit, Search and Remuneration Committees. I stood down as Chair of Governors on appointment as Chair of Trustees of The Sir John Brunner Foundation.


Gail Snelson

I have over thirty years’ experience in a variety of careers in both private and public sector companies. I am currently working as Treasurer of 146 (Northwich) Squadron ATC, a voluntary organisation with close links to the RAF, providing training and development opportunities for 13-20 year olds. I have two children, one completing her studies at SJD in June 2017 and one starting his SJD studies in September 2017.


Parent Governors 

Ken Beesley-Evans

For 20 years I have worked in various sales management positions and have gained significant negotiation experience at a senior level. I am an effective manager of people and business alike and thrive on a challenge. I have 2 children ( one son currently in the college studying A levels ) and one son aspiring to join the college in 2018. My interests around my career and family include various sports and a passion for a variety of music from different eras.

Nathan Broad

I'm currently Group IT Director for a global Clinical Trials business and have spent over 25 years in IT. I've been the Compliance Officer for a European business and Chairman of the Trustees for a Defined Benefit pension scheme in the UK. As a new governor in 2017, I trust my knowledge and experience will add value, especially as I join the Audit and Search Committee. I've lived in Northwich for about 20 years and have a daughter in the college, with a son soon to follow.

I have worked at SJD since 2005. I am currently Head of Humanities, teaching History and Politics. I have been a staff Governor for three years, and sit on the Policy and Resources and Curriculum and Quality sub-committees.
