Consultation on development project

Sir John Deane's Sixth Form College launches public consultation on proposed redevelopment project.

Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College has today opened a public consultation on a proposal to redevelop part of the existing College site to create new permanent teaching and study spaces for students. The consultation will run from 23 March to 13 April 2026.

In recent years, demand for places at the college has grown significantly, reflecting sustained increases in the local 16–18 population. The college experienced a significant growth in applications ahead of the current academic year which we were delighted to be able to support. However, to accommodate those students we need further investment in the estate to ensure that we have the space to meet the ongoing learning, inclusion and assessment needs of our students.

To ensure confidence in our admissions process, we have set the maximum capacity for the college at 2050 students. We have no plans to exceed a capacity of 2050 and have introduced new mechanisms in our admissions policy to fairly manage this. The proposed redevelopment will help ensure the College has the appropriate space to meet the ongoing learning, inclusion and assessment needs of students now and in the years ahead.

The proposed development will not expand the physical footprint of the College. Instead, it will redevelop part of the existing building to provide additional high‑quality, permanent accommodation that supports teaching, independent study and student support. The development project will not affect the experience of existing students at the college whilst it takes place.

To support the delivery of the project, The Sir John Brunner Foundation intends to apply to the Department for Education’s Post‑16 Capacity Fund, which provides capital investment for post‑16 providers in areas experiencing demographic growth. Securing this funding would help the College to deliver the additional permanent teaching accommodation required.
